Where shall I put a swallow nest cup?
For optimal placement, nest cups should be spaced at least 1 meter apart. To ensure the birds have enough room to settle comfortably, leave at least 6 cm of clearance above the nest cup.
Swallows are incredible birds that rely on airborne insects for food, which means they must migrate south each autumn to follow warm weather. They travel all the way to the southern tip of Africa for the winter, returning every spring, typically in April.
Upon arrival, their top priority is finding a suitable nesting site. Unfortunately, this is becoming increasingly difficult as old buildings are demolished or renovated, farm structures are secured or converted, and some existing nests are even removed in the name of tidiness.
Thankfully, swallows readily use specially designed open nest boxes placed in enclosed spaces like porches or outbuildings. To encourage nesting, install a Swallow Nest inside a building with easy access, such as a garage or outhouse with an open door or window.
