Dried Calci Worms are a cheaper but just as nutritious alternative to dried mealworms. They are readily taken by a wide variety of wild birds, particularly insect eating birds and are a firm favourite of Robins! They are a very high protein food source which is essential for birds, especially during the moult season in late summer which can last up to 5 weeks.
Calci Worms are the larval stage of the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens). Similar in appearance to dried mealworms, Calci Worms have much higher fat and calcium levels, perfect for stronger eggshells in the breading season and higher energy content in the colder months.
Dried Calci Worms can be rehydrated prior to feeding by soaking in warm water to provide the birds with additional moisture; this is particularly helpful during spring as the added moisture makes the Calci Worms easier for young birds to swallow. When natural insect supplies are low, particularly in winter, insect loving birds will turn to gardens for an alternative food source.
Feeding Advice: Whilst similar in appearance, if your birds are used to eating dried mealworms it can take a little while for them to get used to the different taste of Calci Worms but they will soon be enjoyed by all!
