Niger is a tiny black seed which is a particular favourite of Finches and Siskins, Niger contains high levels of amino acids which are particularly beneficial for young fledglings. When providing Niger seed you are likely to see an increase in goldfinches visiting your garden!
Niger seeds are from the Ramtil plant native to Ethiopia and is a relative to the sunflower plant. Often spelt nyger or nyjer, and miss-sold as thistle, it is a tiny oil rich seed that is high in energy, protein and is easy to digest.
If fed from the ground or a bird table Redpolls may be attracted to the garden. When feeding from a hanging feeder Niger can either be mixed with other seeds or fed from a specialist Niger feeder which have very small ports to prevent wastage.
